I work in structural biology. My X-Windows programming interests mainly involve 3D visualization. I have a general interest in better strandardization, including better support for non-pointer input devices, and avoiding hacks like mapping button events to the Z axis.
The Freedesktop specs are an important step forward in organizing the X-Windows user environment.
Recently, I have been looking at the X Toolkit. It seems that the newer toolkits like GTK could have been implemented as a new set of widgets that match resources using functional hints. However, there may be other design flaws that I am not aware of.
